Thermo King Story

While playing golf on a hot summer day in 1938, Numero and his friend received a phone call informing them that fresh chicken in a truck had spoiled due to a breakdown and the hot weather. This loss sparked their thinking. One of their friends suggested building a mechanical refrigeration unit, and Numero enthusiastically embarked on this great project. Numero became the founder and first president of Thermo Control (now known as Thermo King) in the United States.

In 1938, Joseph Numero and Frederick Jones successfully obtained a patent for the "Type A" transport refrigeration unit, the first practical mechanical transport refrigeration system. It laid the foundation for the rise of frozen foods, large supermarkets, and the restaurant industry, making affordable fresh produce more widely available.

In 1942, Thermo King's Frederick Jones developed the first portable refrigeration unit for overseas troops. It not only allowed soldiers to enjoy fresh food and cold drinks on the front lines but also assisted field hospitals in storing temperature-sensitive medicines and plasma.

In 1958, Thermo King introduced diesel engines into refrigeration units, which was a significant advancement. Diesel engines had longer lifespans compared to gas-powered units and contributed to the rapid development of long-haul trucking.

In the 1960s, Thermo King continued to innovate and expand its business scope, including automotive air conditioning, milk coolers, beer keg coolers, and more. Thermo King has always been at the forefront of product innovation, bringing convenience to the refrigerated transport industry while reducing energy consumption and emissions.
